Colorectal laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive colorectal surgery, is a modern surgical technique used to treat conditions affecting the colon, rectum, and anus. Unlike traditional open surgery, which involves a large incision, laparoscopic surgery is performed through several small incisions, typically about 0.5 to 1 cm in size.
Procedure
Preparation: Prior to the procedure, patients undergo preoperative evaluations, including imaging studies and possibly bowel preparation to ensure a clean working area.
Insertion of Instruments: Small incisions are made in the abdomen. Through these incisions, the laparoscope, equipped with a camera and light source, is inserted.
Surgical Maneuvering: Specialized laparoscopic instruments are introduced through additional small incisions. These tools are used to perform the surgery, whether it’s removing a portion of the colon, repairing a hernia, or addressing other colorectal issues.
Completion: Once the procedure is complete, the instruments are removed, and the small incisions are closed with sutures or adhesive strips.
Recovery: Patients typically experience a shorter recovery period with laparoscopic surgery compared to traditional open surgery.
